FAQ

The short answers. If yours is not here, the sitemap lists everything the site can do.

What is FirstCinema?

A place to keep track of the films you watch. Rate them, write about them, collect them into lists, and see what the people you follow made of the same film.

Do I need an account?

Not to look around. Browsing films, reading reviews and opening other people's lists is open to everyone. Rating, reviewing, lists, watchlists and recommendations all need one, because all of them are yours.

How do ratings work?

Half a star to five, in half-star steps. Rating a film is separate from writing about it: you can score something in one click and never say another word, and that rating still counts everywhere a rating counts.

What is the difference between a rating and a review?

A rating is a number; a review is what you actually thought. Writing one also logs the viewing in your diary and marks the film watched, so a review never leaves the rest of your history behind. Reviews can be flagged as containing spoilers, which hides the text until the reader asks for it.

Why can I not find a film?

The catalogue only carries films with a real audience behind them, so shorts, festival titles and some older releases do not make the cut. If something is genuinely missing, there is a request box at the bottom of the films page. Give us the title and we will go and find it.

Where do my recommendations come from?

Your ratings, your lists, and members whose taste lines up with yours. The more you rate, the sharper they get. Discover asks five questions about what you are in the mood for tonight; Roulette skips the questions and simply picks one.

What are lists for?

Anything you would otherwise keep in a notes app: a year in review, a director you are working through, the five films you would hand someone. Lists are public, and other members can save or copy yours.

Can I use FirstCinema in another language?

English, Spanish and French. Switch from the language control in the header; film titles come through in your language wherever we have a translation for them.

How do I change or delete my account?

Everything about your account lives under Settings: your username and email under Account, the look of the site under Appearance. Deleting your account sits at the bottom of the account settings, and takes your reviews, ratings and lists with it.
