Overview

Hoping to settle in Gunsan, filmmaker Hwang Yun encounters the ruined village of Haje in 2018. Nearly every resident has left, but Jeon Jin-hyeon remains, resisting eviction by the Ministry of National Defense. A 600-year-old hackberry tree, another of Haje's last inhabitants, is threatened by expansion of a U.S. military base. Peace activists gather to protect it, and Yun joins them. As dangerous weapons arrive at the base, they hold the monthly Paeng Paeng Cultural Festival, seeing Haje and the tree as a frontline of peace. After more than five years of effort, the tree is designated a national heritage site.

How It Feels

Read from this film's synopsis, keywords and credits, and used to work out what it sits beside.

A patient documentary chronicle of a small South Korean village fighting erasure by a military empire, anchored by the filmmaker's own unexpected conversion from observer to participant. It is both an intimate portrait of resistance and an elegy for a place that should not have to be saved.
