<b>NY Premiere Screening

Thanks to Shudder, I was able to attend the New York premiere for writer and director Ted Geoghegan’s <b><i>Brooklyn 45 </i></b>ahead of its streaming debut in mid-June 2023.
Before I dive into the film, the audience was filled with familiar faces from both the film and other horror favorites, as well as industry folks to bump elbows with.
The film, which takes place post-World War II, immediately sets the tone — a somber evening at a common friend’s Park Slope home to comfort a friend after his wife’s death. Insults and drinks are shared, but then we immediately shift into mystery-mode when the talk of a séance is discussed. Once started, the quick laughing matter soon turns into a what-the-fuck-just-happened moment, ultimately leading to the death of a main character who orchestrated most of the film’s plot. The rest of the attendees scramble to determine how to end the séance while also trying to expose the secrets of those there, and how they will eventually escape from the home.
There was a lot of quick character development at the beginning, which helped guide acts two and three. Friendships are broken, lies exposed, tension elevated, and ultimate sacrifices made. Each actor was a perfect fit for their respective roles.
While I did enjoy <i>Brooklyn 45</i> and laughed multiple times throughout, I found it to be less horror and more suspense (and supernatural), but it will definitely entertain all audiences.
