Is Sam Raimi back? Yes and no.
While it's nice to see him back behind the camera, making the magic he does, <I>Send Help</i> was something I was not expecting of him. Lumping this film into the horror genre is a far stretch as it aligns more with a thriller (and a bit of comedy). However, we all have different interpretations of what a horror film is. For me, this strayed from the genre while providing some good fights and gore. I also do not recall Raimi's signature camerawork here, but his directing skills are still in top form.
Watching Rachel McAdams channel Drew Barrymore's "Josie" from <I>Never Been Kissed</i> was also an odd choice, but never judge a book by its cover as they always have some sneaky tricks up their sleeve. It works as a counterpart to Dylan O’Brien's smug, douche-y presence, and their onscreen chemistry was fitting.
If you're looking for an <I>Evil Dead</i> film, you won't find that here. What you'll get is almost two hours of a somewhat fun-turned-survival story that takes some time to develop. Once the characters' newfound reality kicks in, <I>Send Help</i> needs anything but. <wink>
