educations does not work upon coldness because the only result you'll get is temporary. bits of pieces here and there are specifically about lust and love but it never really goes anywhere or is presented in its first half.
and largely, looking at the sexual history of the director kim ki-duk it feels very insencere in its depiction of lust especially because kim ki-duk plays one of the two main character and it so happens that he plays the character actively participating in his lust. furthermore, i don't think the film actively believes in its religious cycle because the only thing it really depicts is a cycle of coldness and isolation that only brings pain and loneliness. oh young-soo gives a decent performance, he does his job well but the script only gives him 1 sort of emotion so there isn't much to feel other then kinda just hate him like everybody else who participates in this dumb cycle. his characters teaches lessons but those lessons could be told by anyone else, especially about animal cruelty without sorting to generally something almost being close to child abuse. sure, his and the films main theme is also about life but what is life when you've known nothing other then wasting it? life is not training to learn someone else about. its about people, locations, connection and what you do with it and sure, if you wanna live like a monk then do it but not like this.
is the film about this? maybe but that would bring up the issue that it never critique's this cycle and rather shows it as a legacy and legend to be held in motion for years to come.
