the on screen duo of jean-pascal zadi and raphaël Quenard is decently charming but thats all it really has. its cheezy and unbearable akward at moments and largely the longer the film went on the more i wished the camera actually moved rather then every shot being static.

the romanticization of the american myth and dream, while based on real events, is still romanticization and it never does more with that. its kinda just like this years micheal but slightly less offensive.
ingeneral i think, while we truly need uplifting stories feature and about black people, this will just give people false hope. thats not really due to the movie itself, its just the timing of it being released that sucks because if anything, american is not this and it doesn't take place in the current year but that effect is still not gone. this would be fine if either the screenplay, score or film making were good but some of the choices in all three categories remain qeustionable at best.
