Satantango

an endurance test, an achievement but also just a damm good movie.
bela tarr's style of film making is slow and nihilistic, i really liked damnation and family nest was fine but satantango is on another level of his film making abilities. i love long movies and by extension slow cinema. the film follows a hungarian village who all have problem rooted in the system but also within the collapse of the fall of communism.

the film is a perfect encapsulation of those slow but mournfull days. while i do think it can sometimes feel self indulgent with its film making, again, i don't specifically mind that.
its definitely a lot and i see a lot people take days or breaks but i encourage to NOT do that. sure, its a lot to take in but imo you get a lot more out of a film like this within in one sitting.
its a film thats like most of tarr's films, beautifully nihilistic and moodfully sad but its also interesting in its demonstration on the effects of democracy and its immidiately effects, democracy is fast and invades the lives of these people and within that, they don't have a lot of options in what to do.
