Vacancy

I always consider <i>Vacancy</i> to be one of the scarier, let’s say, home invasion films (do we need a new sub-genre here? How about travel invasion?).

The setting of the film is uneasy. If you’ve traveled, you’ve stayed at a little hotel/motel, and the possibility that you’re being watched in your room has crossed your mind, especially when seeing stories about Airbnb and campground areas where people have found recording devices that were purposely placed.

In <i>Vacancy</i>, your worst nightmares about the above come true.

Throughout the film, a couple are stalked by two men wearing masks, intent on torturing and killing them for play and work. Yep, they’re making movies and distributing/selling them to others. They’ve also created an underground tunnel system that connects to other rooms at this site, just like the terrorist group Hamas has done throughout Palestine, in order to surprise, torture and eventually kill guests. These tapes are also left for potential victims to watch.

<i>Vacancy</i> hits all of the right spots. It’s suspenseful, has a fine cast, and the story was well-written from beginning to end. My only complaint is that Beckinsale and Wilson didn’t have the right chemistry, but still gave it their all to survive the night.
