i've read some of the top reviews and my main takeaway is that the film is suppose to be very catholic. wether that is true is not my decision to make considering im mainly an atheist.
the film presents a virgin giving birth and im probably missing a lot of things because of my non religious background as im more interested in marie as a character and the implication of her giving birth in other ways. are woman doomed to give birth and maternal life?
birth can be beautifull but the film also makes me feel a sort of unease and what woman actually mean as people that can reproduce. obviously misyogyny is in play but not always and the reality that woman ARE seen as their reproductive organs and the lack their off being seen as something else. but what are woman and also men? are we different? obviously i don't think so but the material structure of life and to extension birth is interesting to dissect and ask ourselves about. its religious text is a mystery to me, like i said but that doesn't put me off necesarrily, in many ways, old and new cinema, religion is there and have created for some of the best works cinema as a concept has given and largely i think hail mary should be in that conversation because it not only works inside but also outside of its supposed religious text.
godard you son of a bitch, you did it again. also gives respect to anything named hail mary unlike project hail mary.
