one of the most interesting films of the year because there is ALLOT to talk about. for one, the release date(s) has been all over the place which should not be the case for a spike lee film.
and second of all its a remake of akira kurosawa's high and low from 1963 which is considered one of the greatest films in terms of not only story but its film making aswell. i think lee had to do a monumental task of not only reshaping kurosawa's masterpiece but also living up to it and i think he almost succeeds.
first of all, denzel washington carries this film on his back, his charismatic performance really makes the character different from his 63 counterpart aswell as the difference in background.
imo there is allot more i could have gotten out of it if i knew how the music industry works but i do know the universal thing what makes everything tink and thats money.
its 63 predecessor is easily top 2 films about how capitalism is a driving force in people's behavior and emotions.
money controls allot of us and what we do, that includes music aswell.
asap rocky's character is pretty good, he's ultimately sort of a dark reflection of the kidnapper in the original film.
where as capitalism made him blind with rage, filled with jealousy....asap's character is more so blind to his own motivations and why he's doing it. at least thats how i see it as in the end, he gets the fame, he wants the money, it feels as if he forgot what made him do it. i also like the theme of artistry and capitalism clashing with eachother, one growing on the others back like a parasite that feeds on the creativity and passion of the people.
also ice spice made an appearance which was funny as fuck
