My unpopular opinion is that this is my favorite Martin Scorcese film.
Favorite (Not Necessarily Best) Four From Every Year Since Birth
When I saw this at the theater, it was an instant favorite. Five-star perfection. I was also weirdly insistent on telling anyone who liked Inception that I preferred Shutter Island, which is still true, but my 25 year old self could have chilled out about it.
I waited 13 years to watch it again. I wasn't sure it could live up to the first viewing and wanted to preserve the memory. It's a different experience when you know the ending, but in a way that adds a new depth. You see more in the actions, words, and expressions of the rest of the cast that you didn't notice the first time because you were focused on Leo.
