Is it TOO weird? Probably. Is it laugh out loud funny? Definitely. Did it almost lose me a couple times? Totally. Will I buy the blu-ray? Obviously, but not until it's on sale.
I spent the first 15 minutes saying "____ is in this?!" and "Is that _____?!" and I loved that. I watched for Josh Hartnett; I stayed for the bad guy from Kindergarten Cop.
I'm not super into war movies. I appreciate that this one was very much like.... "Look at how much this sucks."
Here's the thing. A LOT happens in under two hours. There are so many things happening. Things upon things upon things. Does McKenna Grace's love interest NEED to have a felon dad who used to be her parent's drug dealer and also a grandpa with cancer? Absolutely not. That's too much for a two hour movie. However, stay with me here, what if this movie was a five season show on the CW in the early 2000s, like One Tree Hill? Then maybe it all works? I don't know.
It's bad because the source material is clearly bad, but it's also not as bad as I expected, and the boy's movie project was cute.
I like this slightly more with each watch, but I just really lose interest during the middle with the soldiers.
I was pretty confused about the story most of the time, even with reading the plot summary to try to understand it. I loved all the action though.
With immaculate direction and sharp cinematography, and paired with an intriguing storyline, <I>Faces of Death</i> is one of 2026's best horror films. It ties itself to the original film while also standing on its own, but delivers the same set of fear.
We live in a world where we've become numb to what's seen online, from live-streamed terror attacks and hate marches to beheadings and schoolyard fights. Because we've let our guard down, this content flashes before our eyes as we scroll multiple social media platforms, many of which have gotten in trouble for allowing such content to exist on their apps and websites. In the film, as a content moderator having to approve or flag content, such as the aforementioned, as part of a fictional company, Kino Moderation, our main character begins to notice an account that posts disturbing content that blurs the lines of online distortion or a real-life situation. This dark path leads her to a <I>Faces of Death</i> (1978) copycat whose sole intent is to recreate scenes from the film for the modern age. As more videos appear online, the real game of cat-and-mouse begins, delivering a truly fantastic latter half of the film.
I held off on reviewing this to delay having to defend myself to my family who enjoyed this throughly. It's just not for me, other than three things:
1. Kano is so funny
2. Karl Urban immediately makes this better than the last one
3. They play the MK theme during the end credits, and that's a jam
I love when he kicks the little girl

Bumping it up to five stars on the rewatch because I like everything more when it's part of a Bluesky watch party
