I wasn't expecting so much male nudity. It's fine, I just wasn't expecting it. Also Wikipedia says people are mad at the historical inaccuracies. There was no point in which I thought I was watching a historically accurate movie.
This is a first time watch. I recently realized it's not the same movie as The Patriot, which we watched in school, so here I am. I didn't think this would be for me, because it definitely seems to be one for the bros. I was right, but it was still a solid enough watch.
I thought the big battle with the butts and the spears and the horses was the climax of the movie, so I was surprised to see that it was the middle. This is one of the rare times I prefer the action over the character scenes, but that might be because the characters are dudes.
The dark themes may be reason enough to watch this one, but many of those story elements seem to be there strictly for the shock value.
No explanation is given to Karloff’s “collection”, or his leadership of a Devil cult, and Lugosi’s fear of cats was shoehorned in to simply keep the character from his goal so the story could continue.
Last weekend I watched Didi and cried at the wholesomeness, the naivety, and the struggles of youth. Thelma hits all the same notes but for the elderly. It would be an amazing double feature. Past and future.
In the future, will I steal my friend's scooter and another friend's gun? Maybe, if I have to get my $10k back. Honestly I'm just hoping I will still have friends to steal from if needed.
Anyway, Thelma is a really unique action comedy. For being about a grandma pursuing her scammer, it's surprisingly grounded in reality. I was expecting something wackier; I'm so happy it wasn't. The only real weak spot for me was Daniel's relationship with his parents. There were a few scenes focused on that, and I just wanted to recenter on Thelma.
There is a reason this is held in such high esteem. Really remarkable production, and yes, Lon Chaney looks astounding!
Ben Stiller Eat-Pray-Love's in search of his Manic Pixie Dream Boy, played by Sean Penn.
I remember now why I didn't like this when it came out. It claims to be a comedy starring Ben Stiller, Kristen Wiig, Adam Scott, Kathryn Hahn, and Patton Oswalt. That is a literal-laugh-out-loud type of cast. However, this is not that kind of comedy. It is more like... a wholesome dramedy. I am not opposed to that, but it's not what I signed up for then.
I knew better this time, but either way, I'm still not as into it as the rest of you seem to be. It is pretty, and there are interesting shots. It's just a little too sweet.
I do love Patton Oswalt's parts though, and I love how often Adam Scott plays villains.
Gerald Butler is WAY too pretty and they did the barest amount to change that. His shouting his songs out is distracting too.
The ending makes NO damn sense.
A perhaps under appreciated version of the Phantom of the Opera.
I do not think I have seen this one before, but I really liked it. Gough plays slimy so well. He is truly disgusting in this! Rather annoyed that we never see him get his comeuppance.
This one is a me problem. This is the second time I've watched it, and I just can't focus on it. Even if I put my phone down, no talking, no cats nearby, no snacks, my mind just wanders to something else, or I zone out entirely, mostly during the missions.
Emma Stone at her Emma Stoniest. I want to say this is one of the best recent teen movies, but it's approaching it's 15th birthday. It might still be one of the last quality teen movies, or maybe I'm getting old.
I could do without the singing scene, and I could take an Aly & Aj song at least over the ending credits.
This is the film that sparked the term "manic pixie dream girl", and that makes a lot of sense.
Kirsten Dunst is one of my favorites, but I have trouble getting behind this one. It feels like two movies smushed together, one is a love story, and the other is all the family pieces. A lot of things happen that don't really make sense. How does a new shoe trigger a billion dollar loss? Did Claire quit her job immediately? What is happening here?
I'm still giving it three stars for Kirsten Dunst and for the suicide bike and for the vibe of the early 2000s.
The magic is sorta gone now, right?
It's FINE, but the first is so good. The baby seemed like Jack Jack 2.0, and there seemed to be a lot going on, and I wasn't that interested in any of it. Love the cast though, and Steve Carrell's ability to sing as Gru is a lot of fun.
