A very human film.
The film is disturbing but not like come and see and schindlers list where we see the dread of everything and everyone.
It does show horrible things happening to people, the mother of our main character gets raped.
I can't put it into words because its kinda complicated to put this film in one box.
I mean its tragic but it kinda is also more then that.

anyway denis is, like i mentioned in my arrival review, closer to being in my favorite directors of all time list and also one of the most exciting directors working today.

prisoner is his second best film in my opinion.
its chilling, mysterious, captivating and disturbing.
hugh jackman is so good in this, he should play in more movies like this then superhero flicks and jake gyellenhaal is also great.
also violla davis, an actor i really like is in this so it gets bonus points, i love viola davis.
Im not the biggest denis fan.
I pretty much like all of his films(that i have seen) but im not head over heels over the guy.
Arrival proves he's a great director yet again.
Coming closer and closer to being one of the most excited directors working today.
Arrival is a pretty good blend of sci fi, mystery and drama.
Amy adams is not an actor i really enjoy but in here she was great, its also fun to see jeremy renner in a non mcu role.
Visually it looks great like every denis film i have seen.
Nobody is that freaky.

i think it definitly isn't as well paced and i wouldn't say that any character is bad but i think the opposing members of wich kaij needs to go up against/barely tolerate/discuss with aren't as strong as in part 1.
their still good tho.

its definitly next to dreams, kurosawa's most beautifull film.
especially that dream sequence, so jaw dropping.
i think this film is suprisingly funny for a kurosawa film, especially in the middle.
it definitly confuses me on the meaning behind it all more then with other kurosawa films and the last hour is not as good as its first two but the first two hours are excellent, every scene feels like it belongs in just the right place.
the character interactions are great and the action, while not allot of it, its still great.
also one thing i love more then anything else about kurosawa films are the buildings, clothes and props.
even in more mondaine films like high and low, I WOULD BUY THOSE CLOTHES.
I WOULD WANT THOSE GLASSES.
I WOULD WANT TO SEE BUILDINGS LIKE THAT IN REAL LIFE.

its not as complex like other kurosawa films but it doesn't need to be.
i mean yeah there is probably some hidden meaning behind something but i think this kurosawa films just needed to rely on the dialogue and story then telling us something about humans morally or being a 3 hour long epic.
its a fun film with a very clever main character.
This second watch definitly cements high and low as my favorite kurosawa film.
Engaging.
Morally complex.
And amazing.
The first half of the film takes a majority of the runtime place in gondo's apartment.
He's not evil but has to make a difficult choice, save a boy but come out in such a way that he might be almost to the point of broke.
Like if he doesn't pay up, that makes sense because nobody wants to go broke but then he doesn't save an innocent life in the moment he could.
Will he Sacrifice or not?
Yeah there isn't much to say.
I like the climax and the villain.
Basil himself is a good character but man nothing interesting happens in the middle half of the film.
I liked the dog tho
