pretty much fails at being anything remotely of what it wants to be and generally napoleon is portrayed more as a capatalist then a caricature of stalin so in the end it just says the complete opposite of what it wants to say against communism. i have the original novel, never read it but i hope this isn't as lame and flappy "critique" of communism lol.

expected a much more interesting film honestly.
if anything, the historical context, background but eventual conflict feels very much like an after thought even tho the whole film relies on it.
song kang-ho, lee byung-hun and lee young-ae give great performances when they don't speak english but thats the thing, half of the time they do speak english and then the bad part of the performances start to happen. if anything, it distracts from the fact the film is about identity, nationalism and other stuff.maybe i myself lack historical knowledge but its much less sympathetic towards both sides then i thought it would be. to be fair, park chan-wook is not sympathetic with his characters most of the time but here i think it should've been neccesary to complete its themes of nationality, identity and ideologies boiling up inside everyone around us and how it divides us. its much more interested half the time in portraying north korean as cartoonishly evil and brainwashed people and im not arguing if they are or not but it also doesn't feel like a fair thing, especially since lee byung-hun's character feels much more brought into a sympathetic light which is good, he's someone tragically traumatized but that light is only one way and i feel song kang-ho's characters feels much less like an actual character and more so just an ideology which is fine but presenting him like he's a character, thats where i have a problem with. before i say more no, im not saying its wrong for a KOREAN director to talk about his history or culture or ideologies playing inside both the sides of his country but it all just feels so weakly written.
the movie fails the make the female lead compelling in any shape or form which irritates me, its expected of early park chan-wook considering he wasn't really great at writing female characters which most directors aren't but thats just an lame excuse, woman aren't sub humans. and ultimately she doesn't connect to both lee byung hun and song kang-ho's character in identity and nationality enough which i find so strange, there feels almost no tension in her roots as a swiss korean. dissapointed but its directed decently enough.there is a small friendship blooming between song kang-ho and lee byung hun's characters throughout the film but is always shut down due to nationalism that divides us....but it never felt like chemistry, it never felt like there was so its hard to care about it.

so obviously of its time but its simplicity can be beautifull when it wants to be. the choice to shoot on early digital camera's is a great one and its kinda funny to say but wouldn't the jackass movie be a stepping stone in digital cinema and one of the best examples of it?
its definitely homoerotic.

Definitely one of the most interesting animated release of the year.
Fiction and reality are realms bound to eachother but the limitation that we hold with stories is something very real. In both film making, writing, song and most artforms. And while limitations are a way for creativity, there are people that use those limitation to squeeze every bit of joy and uniqueness out of you until you give up. I think i am frankelda is a touching story about that, while its characters can sometimes just feel like they only inhabit that, the performances and animation makes them feel alive in a mix with the writing of its themes.I relate to this story, especially now since i attend a film school and it becomes very weird the longer im there. There isn't anything wrong with it per say but it more so holds those same limitations in style, uniqueness and rules that allow creativity to be crushed.

Lackluster script, lens flairs that reminded me of that one scene from superman and dhar mann level performances. Its direction is clean even if its just midtier spielberg which is still impeccable btw and it does impress me, especially that oner in the second act of the film. But a lot of the choices is just another couple of pointers as how commerciality takes spielberg (and his writers) over.
There is a bit of subtext on film making and spielberg but if you want that without all the nonsense and bullshit then just watch the fabelmans.
It fails to look at extraterrestrial in a religious light or any light so what you get is nothing. Its all just mostly nothing.Never let david koepp write again😭

Overly dissapointed by how lackluster it eventually was in both its descalation due to capitalistic tendencies but also the personal stuff on the line for our main characters.
Its editing is pretty good and unique at instances. It can be to much at times but ultimately its good. What sucks the most is that its all there, its story is unique and captivating on paper, its film making is good even when some of its shots look like shit but the story feels like what na hong-jin has already displayed he's capable of and this is a much less interesting anti hero story then chaser. It shows his scratch for big budget blockbuster feel and bringing that to korean cinema but here its still in its infancy and so its not fully formed.

its last 25 min are terrifying and even at home i would shit my pants which says a lot but before that, its kinda just your average found footage supernatural flick and the makeup is amazing for the eventualy supernatural being, it isn't anything unique either. yes we've seen a scary girl with long bangs before. its top selling point are the performances and the last 25 min. other then that, its kinda empty if fun.

This 영 화 is something that more so then ever needs to and is relevant to the social climate.
The 영 화 portrays a man's life shuffled through its natural order but generally portrays him as a pathetic loser either way until its 3rd act where he changes into something else thats much nicer to others around him but the film lays the qeustion: does he deserve empathy after all that?
And the film asks you, is change worth the empathy of others when that change originates from something much darker? My answer would be yes under the right context and ideals.

hirokazu kore-eda is like the anti kiyoshi kurosawa. a film brimming with sentimentality but the movie earns that by smartly placing connective tissue between all main characters.
i do wished the two investigators were more actual characters but most of the cast has a reason and a goal that go over eachother or compliment eachother. while it is another film bringing to light the reality of lower class people, it does so in a very earnest way and is mostly void of nihilism for most of its runtime which feels fresh. sure, i don't think its as smart as other films that empty to critique a certain element of modern capitalist society but again, it does so with wearing its sentimentality on its sleeve.

i like that the rat being poisoned is the eventual metaphor for men leading themselves to self destruction due to their attraction to younger woman but largely it felt like it thought it was more interesting then it actually is. if anything, i do apreciate the fact it definitely inspired someone like bong joon-ho down the line but its not as interested in class conscioussnes then having increasingly more moments that fills its glass to the brink until it spills over. i do really like the performances, especially by Lee Eun-shim and kim jin-kyu and i don't think its actually bad. i do like some of these events and narrative pieces but as a whole puzzle, it lacks a clearer and definitive picture.

in its qeust to be a confusing narrative about grief, the past while inersecting with family, it all piles up into something im not really a fan off. while i do like its somewhat nihilistic tone, it never feels rewarding in the sense that its themes never really display a level of humanity within these characters. if anything, they feel hollow and to allow such a narrative to work, you have to at least have some characters that get more deep the longer we know them. i do like most of the performances and cinematography but there isn't a lot to find for me to like and like another korean mystery, forgotten, the mystery is in first place while the characters are rather lackluster but at least in forgotten it wasn't as boring.

The film looked beautifull but what i find the most interesting about this bit matt johnnson as a whole is that he litteraly just plays himself in most of his films and show. For someone like ryan reynolds, it sucks but with each film mr. Johnnson places another piece of himself through weird concepts.
The blackberry, a band and now the faking of the moonlanding. Idk, its just a good time but it also interesting conceptually, matt digs deeper and deeper throughout the film and while i wouldn't it say its a deep exploration on it, there is a bit of american exceptionalism in there which the further the story goes, turns the cia into something it is and thats radicalization.
