pretty much solidifes lorcan finnegan as one of the more fascinating voices in horror allongside the surfer.
i think what most films about parenthood miss is the fact rather then it being filled with dissapointment, anger or screaming....it can feel empty.
vivarium places that empty feeling and uses liminality to fill its horror.
the same places, over and over again. when a child needs to grow up, they need to have a place to stay and sure thats good for the childs development but the longer the years go by, the more your inviroment becomes normal and largely the same and hollow as nothing is able to be explored anymore. but the film also sees a young couple pushed into being parents, a kid is not necesarrily a must but there is a slight societal pressure to raise one since its a normality.but i also like how it tells us that maybe being parents isn't for everyone and that children are for a lot of people, relationship ending thing.

chantal akerman's 1978 film is slow, shot with a lot of long takes and the longer the scenes go on, the more we but anna feel detached from this world but people as well.
i've encountered it many times myself, people change and maybe not in the best ways that fit who you are at the current time. i've felt that detachment from both people around me but reality as well sometimes.
most of who i know or knew are either living their own lives or still see me as something im not. people i knew from middle and elementary school peeking at my tiktok account makes me especially detached from the modern generation of dutch teens and chilren but also makes me kinda furious. maybe if i knew where their hatred or mockery came from, i would understand but i think i don't wanna know.anna feels exactly that way, detached from modern society and reality which accumilates into a state of loneliness.

Generally bankrupt and sometimes just lazy pandering too maga heads.
Generally the best jokes in the first and even second one were wacky or clever dialogue but here, they barely tried and it often does what most dogshit parody films do and just mention shit they are referencing.
Also kai cenat on the big screen.
Inoffensive at best and offensive at worst but not due to any of the jokes but more so the fact that its lazy even if the wayans are clearly trying which might be contradicting but are these really the best jokes you could've come up with?

its very obvious that berry levinson isn't a comedy director, he's not really good at comedic timing or giving his actors any sense of comedic guidance. its all played to straight.
everything else is suprisingly good. im not gonna act like the story and characters themselves are specifically special but the framework and world they inhabbit are.
the relationship between kid centric media conglomerates and the militairy and war is something not often depicted in films. but here its front and center with a beautifull backdrop consisting of colorfull but liminal sets, costumes and production design. there will always be something sinister about things being so kid focused it becomes a parody to me. but robin williams and his character are weird too, he's generally very kid like as well and the hero of the story. the need for the preservation of childhood innocence thats in relationship with toys shines bright in leslie. if anything, he's the classical toymaker archetype often presented in these types of stories but this one has an entire different context and meaning behind it that changes it.
it doesn't really have a lot to say on the consumerist side of toys but it never really wants to.
im more flabbergasted that will all lead to euphoria due to one man's films and seed.(watch my films

A few weeks ago I walked across the street with a couple of friends, we passed by a school for special needs kids. The fences were not high but looked almost prison like, they weren't trapped yet it looked like that and I was more dissapointed by the fact that most of those kids will have a society who disapproves and mocks them but above all, that if they get loved enough.
I don't have a disability but I always was fascinated by the rejection and mockery it always got.

generally slow paced and calculated with how its shot, i do like certain elements like violence against woman, the violence causes by alcoholism and guns and adam scott but it also felt so middling in many places.
who is jerry? idk and honestly i don't care. while i do find its horror good, it is bogged down by its themes not being strong or focused enough. i thought mccarthy said more about abuse against specifically woman in oddity then here where, its also a metaphorical hell. each level of the hotel is another layer of hell yet we only go into one and its just a dark cave. would've been more interesting if it was just more.

generally while the cast is just full of nepo babies and family of trovolta, some do give decent performance and its generally inoffensive because who is gonna take this seriously?
but it does drown in its own nostalgic headspace to the point where it doesn't allow for anything else to matter and for being a 60 min feature, it doesn't use that limited time to do something interested and its just a wealthy kid and his mom flying while he gets everything he wants but still whines on the occasion. trovolta feels somewhat inspired by wes anderson in his color usage but it never goes fully copy or something of its own so what you get is shots that feel like they belong in a wes anderson film but they don't and they look drabb and dull with the addition of it being shot digitally. its definitely something trovolta was passionate about but its clear that passion is rooted in the nostalgia of his childhood and expensive gifts. there is a slight hint of the escapism of hobbies of a kid but it never really does anything with it.

something melancholy that roots its dreamy but ultimately deathly and timely discussion in a little modern chinese town.
i think its sense of wandering around is cool and it opens up great scenery. it does make me irritated tho how much narration is used, driving its message home so much and honestly, it would've been better if there was less. a debute but a good one nonetheless.

I like how the film was released in the year i was born.
The film itself is both classical in how john woo it is and how soap opera it is which, i think works here. Great camerawork and the depth of the characters aren't amazing but i do like the strategy involved before battle. I always like when there is an elaborate way the protagonists wins. The 35 mm cinematography looks great and the scale in which woo directs is incredible. Allongside the great camerawork, its one of the few films were its fast paced editing works and compliments whats going on. Its not too slow or too fast.
The production design for everything from the costumed to the boats all are fantastic. They do ride the line between cheap but cool costumes and actually great costumes.

A leftover from the last years of the 2000s comedy and you can tell (derogatory)
There is a reason why the mid budget studio comedy died and thats because of slop like this. People always say "they don't make comedies like they used to" yeah because the comedies you grew up with were slop and you only liked them because they said slurs.

Characters trapped inside transitional lives and spaces that remembers that specific version but never the correct one. Backrooms as a film is very interesting, i would argue to people who say this concept doesn't work as a film that it does. In fact i would say liminal spaces are the single best piece of horror you could use in film as a medium. Film is something that obviously requires space but what happens when that space is stretched and shaped into something beyond reality?
Childhood trauma and divorce are probably the two best beginner choices for this world and idea because they're both entirely transitional but ones that are difficult to process and get out off. I've seen no one really talk about this despite how obvious it is but the backrooms itself is so clearly an extension to both clark and Mary. Even the scientists are an extension really, we all are stuck in liminal spaces most of the time and the backrooms captures that very concept.
Kane parson still obviously needs to build his craft but this is still very impressive. To draw comparisons, curry baker's obsession was something I liked but its so obviously stuck in shitty lighting and cinematography that adheres to the modern convention of elevates horror. Cinematography that is stuck in the middle, the central and obviously, the backrooms has central shots but its far more interesting its lighting and cinematography. Sure, Kane had a bigger budget but with a smaller budget, shouldn't you come up with unique ways to make your film?
Obviously this film is gonna be divisive overall but generally, I think this film has a lot more to talk about and to offer then something like obsession.
