I'm a huge fan of How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966), and I just realized this is included on one of my special edition dvds of it, so I gave it watch since it is spooky season. I kind of hate it? The animation looks off to me, along with the Grinch's voice. I just didn't like anything about this. Whomp whomp.

Paul Rudd and Jason Segel, with a touch of Rashida Jones, is just what the doctor prescribed.
<I>I Love You, Man</i> is one of my favorite films not because of the storyline (it's ridiculous, but somewhat credible), but the laughs. There are some really smart one-liners throw about, and mostly improvised, but it's the chemistry between Rudd and Segel that brings everything full circle. Funny enough, you would think the film was directed by Judd Apatow, but it wasn't (John Hamburg also directed <I>Along Came Polly</i>, which stars Ben Stiller and features the late Philip Seymour Hoffman as a washed up actor.
To prepare for the inevitable laughter, I turned the lights down low, switched to LG OLED's Perfect Black, and let the film (and TV) do the talking. The results: Nonstop laughter.

Sometimes Venom looks like Beetlejuice when Beetlejuice is a snake.
I don't really like this movie overall, but I would love a 20 minute supercut called Eddie and Venom's Best Moments. I'm sure it's on YouTube.
It's like the whole script existed, and then they went back to only the Eddie/Venom interactions and added jokes. It doesn't fit together, but those additions are the moments I like.
I was a Mary Kate & Ashley girl in a big way. I just got 19 of their movies on VHS and DVD, and I started with this one because, duh, it's October. I hooked up my VCR, popped in the tape, and started on my journey. There was about a half hour where it did those black and white lines that warp the picture and make the sound skip. Super annoying but dang it took me back. When it was over, I rewound the tape, because I'm not a monster.
Thoughts on the actual movie? It holds up better than Halloweentown but not as well as Hocus Pocus. It's a made for TV movie though so the bar is lower. It's funny in a Michelle Tanner one-liner way. 10/10 for Halloween festivity. The villain is a witch who has a gravedigger like rich people have a gardener, and no one even thinks that's weird.
I love Keira Knightley and Lucy Liu, but if it wasn't for the bizarre 90210 plotline with Brian Austin Green and Ian Ziering, this would be 1.5 stars.
The whole movie has the same frenetic energy as Crank. The lighting makes everything in the foreground look yellow and green and all the backgrounds look black. It was visually almost unwatchable, and it was trying to balance more plots than I can remember even though I just finished it 20 minutes ago.
However, my husband always says "I'm Domino Harvey, and I'm a bounty hunter" as his Keira Knightley impression, and I do love that.
My second favorite home invasion movie after Home Alone.
I think the Letterboxd community is underrating The Strangers, or maybe the simple home invasion has lost its effectiveness in the era of Ring Doorbells and smartphones and Uber. This is one of the scariest movies I've seen in terms of likelihood of it happening to me, especially because I was living in West Virginia when it came out, which is already a little scary. It puts you in the position to think about what you would do if you were randomly chosen, and it has a few really effective jump scares.
Kevin McCallister is making his family disappear... by murder! It really feels like millennials should have circled back around and made this the Halloween version of Home Alone by now.
I was super into this as a kid because it's the kids from Home Alone and North (I was the one North fan in 1994), even though I guess I shouldn't have been watching it at all. It is a little ridiculous, but it is exactly what I want in an early 90s thriller.

This is exactly what I want in a Halloween short. Give me the characters that I love, ideally focused on a secondary character who deserve the spotlight, and stay true to the spirit of the core franchise.
I love a lot of the songs, but they are all in the first half, and then I am just a little bummed for the second half that all the songs I wanted to sing are over.
Also I remember when this would be on tv when I was a kid, and I would see scenes as I flipped through the channels, but I would have to flip away fast because they are in underwear and I didn't want to get in trouble.

Come for the Late Night with the Devil 70s TV show vibes, stay for the examination of misogyny and the dangers of being a woman. What are girls for?
The true story is a lot more horrifying and robust, but I like that this centered on the woman from The Dating Show instead, with flashes to some of the other women. A drama detailing the full extent of Alcala's crimes would be just endlessly devastating and brutal to watch. It's still devastating and brutal, but the shift in subject separates it from some of the other serial killer projects (looking at you, Ryan Murphy). It never becomes torture porn, not even a bit. If you want all the gory details, you can Google it on your own.
By the numbers bad CGI creature feature. Script could have used a little work for sure. They keep talking about a bad storm coming that never comes and plays no part in the story. Creature has apparently been in the waters for ages, but only two people have ever seen it or fallen victim to it, until now, and “That old car ferry has been sunk and stripped to the bones!” Except for a car filled with gas, several full acetylene tanks, and a flare gun.
Corin Nemec helps make any bad movie better, but even Parker Lewis CAN lose sometimes. (But, honestly, it was still kind of fun.)
