the eat the rich genre of films that have been rolling out since the end of the 2010s due particially to bong joon-ho's parasite, it makes sense.
parasite was an oscar winning film that while didn't have a big box office journey, it did become one of the most well known and beloved films of the century and with that, other people obviously would try to clone its succes yet like any succes, what everyone forgets is that parasite didn't say "riches make everyone evil"
it is a part of that but only a piece of what makes it work, it uses our real world knowledge on company outsource labour and the system that fuels it. it also uses its cinematography like most films but in a unique way to get across its story and especially its editing is elegant in a way that supports everything else.while we have been getting eat the rich films for decades now, parasite paved a way for a new boom. the menu, saltburn, triangle of sadness, blink twice, bugonia and many more.
but largely these films don't know what to say and just reiterate the same thing over and over again. do we need that? more so because these films are made BY the rich which does add a layer of hypocrisy but it doesn't automatically take away from them because they themselves already do that.
there are many eat the rich films out there that aren't parasite which are amazing but im more so talking about newer releases.and what does all of that matter? well how to make a killing is one of these films which came out last month, from the trailer alone it felt off.
it felt like it didn't try to hide its hamfisted ways, the ways its not subtle so i didn't see in theaters but now that its out on digital i ultimately wanted to check it out and what i found is the same recycled slop.
glen powell and ed harris give a decent performance but no one else is memorable enough to be mentioned.
while its story starts out fine, it goes off the rails fast because you don't get to know becket. he's a white man who's decentely off which is the point, he doesn't really need to money yet outside of that his life is largely put to the side or at least the parts that doesn't include his childhood. that childhood doesn't give any characterization.
all of his relationships to other characters feel artificial and qualley is just in here for the sake of having another big star as her character doesn't really support to story or anything in anyway.
she gives a decent performance but she's barely in it.
its cinematography is fine but the camera never is in support or with becket in his journey.
all this film feels is being artificial as it quickly skims from family member to family member all while it screams at us as to what is happening and how we should feel.
liveless.(watch my feature film https://boxd.it/cQ1mBp )
One thing I haven't touched upon is the suits, the sets and just the production design overall is amazing.
The film itself has some fun bits all be it largely forgettable but I just love these fights and weapons and islands and enviroments.

Absolutely nuts and wild but it works for me.
Kong is simply placed into a somewhat bond esk villain plan and while the human character barely have any personality, it doesn't impact the fun and sometimes weirdness of the film.
Yes, i like king kong looking like he smoked a few blunts while being mind controlled.
Also the villain looks very funny to me and his plans are insane but its so ridiculous. Idk how people dislike this one so much, its fun, crazy and a blast.(Watch my feature film https://boxd.it/cQ1mBp )
pretty unremarkable as these characters don't have much going for them.
it still has some good and fun things about it but its mostly buried under nothingness.(watch my feature film https://boxd.it/cQ1mBp )
funnily enough, actually good
a misguided love letter to stunt men and women which i do apreciate but the script is so bafflingely dumb and shit.
i thought, hey, let me watch another recent gosling outing to see if he maybe does have some range but really, this, project hail mary and to an extend, barbie have him playing similaire characters with similaire comedy. jody and colt are not real human beings and they are children who can't think about something for one second.
like their conflict is so stupid. "omg my boyfriend almost died and didn't speak to me but i also didn't contact him at all" STOP FUCKING WHINING PLSSSS.
YOU ARE BOTH FUCKING CHILDREN!!!the stunts are good and i do like its commentary on how stunt men are overlooked in the industry but it feels very thin without anything substantial supporting it. ryan and emily give decent performances while the other performances are just mediocre.

Pretty much what project hail mary should've been in terms of its sincerity because nirvanna the band the show the movie is pretty good in establishing its tone and story which can be insane yet its grounded in a well written and performed friendship where both characters/people are fleshed out for you to care about.
The theater joke where matt realizes its 2008 kills me.

i don't really care anymore if this or something else isn't specifically from the monsterverse, its just fun to watch these japanese b movies.

i do like some of ideas and overall i do like that this time around, the antagonists are not huge kajiu's but instead aliens but i think its missing that commentary about how humans treat foreigners but sadly it doesn't have that.
takashi shimura appears again and im wondering how many characters he's technically playing across these films.
also something im wondering is...why aren't these guys in the modern monsterverse? i don't like the modern monsterverse but it would be neat to see the mysterians again. also i wanna see beast man snow man goddammit.(watch my feature film https://boxd.it/cQ1mBp )
one of the only bad one of these.
generally it just sticks to the formula with nothing new and the human cast are lame as fuck as well.
not much to say here.
