These movies are always fun, its cast is usually great too.
I think this one is the second best, its tale of religion and the power to control the mass is interesting.
I think blanc is the least compelling character here tho. He is good no doubt but he isn't entangled in this mystery and bound to it as a character as much as he should've been.
There are a couple scenes exploring his faith but too little to be an actual arc or character study.The cinematography looks great which shows the talent of Rian johnnson and his team because even great directors like del Toro made dogshit looking films under the Netflix banner.
I don't think its the best one, union glass is my personal favorite but its definitly close.

some of its seqeunces are fun but its all just a mask for the terrible story and characters.
no one is likeable. the people we meet are assholes or boring and have no personality at all. it shot decently well but really, idk why i should care because it all serves no purpose. yeah to move the story but if thats your only goal then really, why are you telling this story?
john trovolta gives a decent performance but the writing really lets him only be an asshole and a pig. not to mention the film out of the blue lets its character say slurs for no reason at all.

while the carpenter's son could've used one more draft of its script as allot of the scenes avoid looking inside its characters, it is still a very interesting film that takes the period piece and modern spiritual horror in a fun direction while still having wonky execution.
nicolas cage gives an amazing performance and so does noah jupe but the meat of it all is its ideas of evil residing close to the most uncertained of places and people, hiding while inflicting damage between personal relationships and society.noah jupe's character is not evil, evil is drawn to him but his parents don't understand. in a way, its a metaphore for being gay or trans in the last couple years. we've come to the point where everything we do draws attention, even if its just going to the grocery store and allot of the times what comes our way are people who seek to banish us or kill us.
Osgood links all of his 3 films by the thematic tension of secrets and how that can abrupt and cause for absolute choas. Its not always brought over the best but I think its really interesting.
Keeper is osgood's take on false marriage and how men often use woman for their own gain when in a relationship. I think there should have been allot more scenes of them being in love because you basically meet this couple in the middle of their relationship.
far better then the edward berger adaptation but i still don't really care for this story that much ingeneral.
i do think the film is way better in the use of its message by sprinkling in little details like the nice mailman getting granted power and turning into an abusive general is pretty cool but the 3rd and especially 2nd half don't interest me that much but paul failing to re enter society is an interesting bit that could potentially serve as its own movie if someone would do that. i think the editing is not fluid at all, its all over the place but i think it compliments the action scenes very well.
its a movie made 90 years ago and in allot of ways it shows but there is also allot more to praise then the soulles 2020s adaptation.
john woo gets more out of this concept then most action directors would and the film has some decent cinematograpgy and choreography but its gimmick of no words is inspiring but not well executed.
i do applaud it for being bold and there is an idea there.
the silence is a manifestation of our main characters grief and how we, also, as an audience silently grief. see thats good but the backdrop is a shitty john wick clone.
the direction is so over the top but it feels as if the different styles of film making in allot of scenes clash which creates an uneven film.
the comedy is boring and its not the characters that drive the comedy, the comedy drives the characters and thats most of the time very lame.

I have not disliked a movie in such a long time like this.
Decent cinematography and lead performances wasted on a flat script that prioritizes looking and acting deep and smart when all it is is violence. War is violence, yes but its such a lame layer of war.
We know what war is, we know how war works. Its not pretty but to translate that into a cinematic language, there is allot you can do then just tell your audience that "war bad" which this movie is and nothing else.I would say its had allot of parallels with elem klimov's 1985 masterpiece come and see. In both we meet a kid/teenager ready to go to war as we see his descent into madness, facial expression and body language.
But in come and see its the little details that make it so special. We see flyora's family for a moments but always in agony. Setting a tone up that we as the audience know but he doesn't.
In berger's film we know nothing about our main character, we don't know anything about anyone.
Come and see is beautifully as its focus and narrative is on one thing and one character. It uses that as to destroy the innocence inside him.
Its not afraid to kill children or woman because the reality of war is that no one is save from it but allot of films including all quiet at the western front do.In come and see there is a clear transformation in emotion in flyora. It culminates in rage.
But paul isn't interesting emotionally at all. At the end there is a sort of parallel again, Paul is dead but a younger looking boy is framed center in the camera before the film ends. Come and see has flyora still alive but near the end has a scene where a similar looking boy, similaire to how he dressed and looked in the beginning of the film stands next to him.
Come and see also just shows instead of tells. I think all quiet on the western front has a boring fucking script and it doesn't help that its like 2 and a half hours long.
