you have toshiro mifune and you waste him on such a sloppily edited, written en paced film like this. that makes me angry, very angry.

Joseph tudisco was in this for one quick shot and I really like that.
im a fan of the first hour but not that much of its second one.
spielberg uses a variety of technique's to make the scenes interesting in the first hour, from a two shots to the first shot of tom hanks transforming from a close up to a over the shoulder shot. but i think the second half misses this arrange of shots. simply, those shots help create a pacing but when you go to just standard static shots you become just another drama.
i still like the cinematography of its second hour but it also just deals with the most uninteresting part of the story which it didn't necesarrily needed to be uninteresting. i do like the moral stance our main character has but he also spouts "america and rules and we are americans are americans because we follow a rulebook" and shit so it would've been a good plotbeat to make him realize that maybe america isn't that great.
Spielberg's first good directorial effort, at least, in the film making itself.
Not much to say about the script. Did like that they all became friends somewhat in the end.
its second act really is the biggest offender here, its sooo big to the point where i feel like nothing is happening. i mean there is but its third act is soooo much better.
what makes this ultimately good tho is its lead performance and the fact that on the surface, this kid seems priviliged because of his racist parents and people around him but its deeper then that, his life makes him think japanese people are beneath him until his maiden slaps him.
he doesn't know any better and in its third act, spielberg creates a mirror between bale's character and a japanese soldiers who looks like a kid.
where bale's character is nurtured into being oblivious, allot of other kids are send to war but neither of them really can escape.
both sides get lost in blood.it also is just better then allot of war films because it doesn't wastes its time with hundreds of characters we don't and never will know and sets its focus on one character.
really that second act bogs it down so much.
spielberg's 90s run went out with a dud
Lincoln is boring, yes but also nothing feels like it ultimately comes together which sucks because this is a pretty important story to tell.
Slavery and its history should be put to film but lincoln is so slow paced without any interesting politics or at least it doesn't present its politics in an interesting light. Lincoln himself and how he's written is not that great as well. I don't hate his character here but he isn't engaging to watch.
Same with everyone else.
The score is unmemorable and forgettable and it sounds like Daniel day Lewis is phoning it in for most of the film.

Spielberg's output in the 2000s is so weird but also shines a light on his adaptability in hopping from genre to genre. From the mediocre catch me if you can to the oke the terminal to this masterpiece.
The tension Spielberg creates her is so fucking thick, woman and men and non binary people alike are jealous of it. Tom cruise is great and i think david koepp's script adds a layer of depth to the invasion story, from the invasion being a sort of metaphore and gateway to cruises character becoming a better father but also the hysteria post 9/11 america and the political climate at the time.
I don't think its a perfect metaphore for exactly that but it does match the hysteria at the time. Its not really interested in how the hysteria was created beyond 9/11 but I don't think it necessarily needed to.Again, Spielberg's long takes are excellent and the editing is great.
Its score is like an homage to the 50s horror films but also is allot more modern. Definitly one of my favorite Spielberg films.
I just wished they didn't show the aliens or created a better design for them.

spielberg's direction is great, the performance are standardly good but my god is it slow for a cat and mouse chase.
for the life of me i can't be engage when the movie walks like a block of cement.where is the punchy editing? the score is unmemorable and really, it doesn't feel like it tried. its good when dramatic scenes happen because its sweeping melancholy fits the scene but when you have the fbi chasing a teenager throughout america, the music just doesn't do it for me as well as the editing.
spielberg's autobiographical story is great at showing the aw of movie making and the general misunderstanding of the artform but it does this while it switches between it to a somewhat boring family drama.
its not terrible but its not interesting after the 1st half at all.with that said i still liked the film and i wasn't gonna drink tonight....but i miss david lynch like a motherfucker.
horrible in almost every way a comedy can be.
the performances are all really annoying, the cinematography looks decent, not much done with the camera. it uses so many medium and total shots and like most comedies from the 21st century it thinks it can pass by with just its dialogue which would be fine if the script wasn't horrendous.the main characters all suck, one is a stoner who dates a high schooler and one is james franco. they have a third act breakup which is fucking hillarious because the writing is so ass that they don't even have a compelling reason as to why this happens. dale just says some mean shit and saul walks away.
judd apatow and all of the films he produced might be the worst thing to happen to the comedy genre as these film lack imagination with the camera and composition. comedy directors who aren't edgar wright pre last night in soho don't do anything special with the technique's and things given to them with the medium of film or even with the editing. its so fucking standard. and overall these types of films relies to much on its over the top crass comedy to actual have heart, a story or even any thematic depth. comedies can be so much more and its a shame the 21st century has never come close to making something as beautiful as sherlock jr or grandma's boy.
