actually really well made in its sets, cinematography and creature designs.
it shows that paul thomas anderson has an eye for creating fun films but he gets the worst writers ever because this is so nothing.

Yeah no this one is abysmal.
I think some of the character work is still pretty good and the performances all around the board are good.
Its just that with the near 3 hour runtime, it spoonfeeds you jumpscares the entire time.
The film is edited like it needs to reach the next scene while its still a completely different one.Pennywise aka bill skarsgard is still fun but my god is he not scary in this film.
The makeup and his performance do the heavy lifting. The vfx are also much worse this time around.
I think what made the first film actually pretty good and worthwhile were the fact we were following children but aside from how good the performances are from the adult losers, the writing for them is so over the place.I don't particularly hate it chapter 2 but I am dissapointed in saying that I don't really like it anymore.
It would be insane if they made a video game like this

Not everything has aged well like some of teen characters obviously but the atmosphere, the music and the usage of the dark make the 78 classic still stand out today as still to this day, many slasher films miss the mark while trying to copy it. Missing what makes the film actually great.
It was never about the gore but rather the sense of helplessnes. A sense of danger that you can't avoid.

i think the best part about it is that he is right, he says the right things but WHY he says and does things is a bit more morally complicated.
shin ha-kyun gives a great central performance and it is Jang Joon-hwan feature debute so not every scene flows aswell as it could've but what rough edges the film has, don't matter because the other parts are great.its a compelling drama but also a unique tale on performative enviromentalism. the ending is silly but i ultimately think it works as it still in line with what the film represents. lee byeong-gu is right but right because of the wrong reasons.
i watched this because (sigh) yorgos lanthimos is releasing a remake soon and i'll probably watch it but im not looking forward to how he's gonna justify its existence because there is a high chance it will just be his usual "weird" style and this original korean feature is weird but its more focus and unique in its style of weird then anything lanthimos has made.
I remember watching the first black phone. It was at the beginning of my letterboxd journey but I remember loving it.
Now 3 years later watching the second film in theaters I am not dissapointed but more so kinda lukewarm on the film.
The grabber is now a freddy Kreuger like character and I think the film using his actual physical form sparingly is pretty cool.Where i think this film goes wrong is in its main leads. So much from the first film is explained but it lingers on certain things a bit to short for it to feel conclusive.
It feels like the cut that is released was trimmed down but thats not official, that's just how it feels.
Im not a big fan of mason thames(sorry juggler) i despised him in the httyd remake from this year and here he is better but both him and his female co lead give over dramatic performance and don't get me wrong i love mr kim coppola cage but they deliver their lines very forcefully.Every sequence that looked like it was shot on a really old camera felt cool up until the third act where most of these scenes were placed in the location that is covered in green screen so then it turns and looks sloppy.
Ethan hawke is as fun as ever in this role and i do like the grabber in this new form its just that the way he can be defeated is way to easy and way to much like the first film in a way.
Gwen and finn's character arcs and story are somewhat good, while the performances are a mixed bag, the story is good here and allot of it does build upon the first film(so does the grabber's reason to return) but the film adds a few new characters that honestly shouldn't have gotten so many lines or screentime. Ernest? Replace him with a plank of wood and his character would stay the same.
And the people at the camp are blank slates besides mando(kinda)

I haven't seen any other film from darren aronofsky but this one doesn't make me interested.
Its based on a novel and the original writer of said novel even wrote the script for this film so im puzzled.
Now to be fair, writing books is very different then writing a screenplay for a film but the film struggles between being a story about fear and trauma or a sorta heist film, both aren't fleshed out enough.
See, the former has some build up but later crumbles as it doesn't know how to go further with it and the latter is really fun, especially when matt smith's character comes into the picture but then that part comes to a screeching halt as both try to mix together in the third act and its just not a good enough pay-off.Matt smith's character is batshit insane and the best part about this film. He has this energy that all of the other characters seem to lack.
This is such a fun story that could lead to some great setpieces but the actors chosen give good performances but they should've been more manic, more crazy like him.
Overall while Austin butler plays his character with sincerity, his story feels like twists and turns just to give him something. His girlfriend and later her death are not as impactfull as the film thinks she is.
Overall while I love violence in my crime films, the deaths here feel pointless, which, maybe that was the point but it comes over so....nothing-less.The villains of this film are also all very 1 dimensional and it feels like they are their for hank's "character arc" to get going.
I do have to say that the score has allot of oomph to it when it comes to its action sequences and the action sequences themselves are a ton of fun.The cinematography is weird because allot of scenes looked good and some others looked very...i would not say bad, just weird. Like when russ and hank get into russes car for the first time and it cuts to russ.....it looked like a green screen background.
Caught stealing isn't bad and it can be really fun but the film tries allot things while not really doing the best it can with those elements.
While over the years the franchise has done "the monsters are real this time" gimmick, i can definitly say that their earliest try is one of its more unique exploration of that concept.
Its not more fleshed out then other scooby movies but the animation has a little more kick to it and i think the story of the film and the story behind the monsters allot cooler then most of the backstories in other scooby movies.
Mystery inc is as loveable as ever and i couldn't be happier.Its just....idk the way the film starts with them living mostly seperate lives was interesting even when we don't see it for a long time.
while peeping tom can linger to much on some of its scenes, its an excellent horror film.
Karlheinz Böhm gives a creepily and freightening good performance that makes him slightly sympathethic despite his actions.
it also helps that the colors POP like a horror comic, the cinematography is obviously beautifull but everything feels so colorfull but the lighting makes those colors sometimes seem normal and sometimes creepy.
