Easily raimi's worst.
Raimi is capable of shaping great movies under a big studio but no one is safe from Disney.
It happened so many times with them but they hire a known or upcoming direct with at least 1 good movie under they're belt and washes away all of the style and substance they once had and raimi is no different.Oz the great and powerful is the story of wizard and oz but with James Franco.
so like the only thing Franco is chosen for is sleeping with his students and he was chosen by himself.
The film genuinely looks ugly as shit and some scenes look really just unfinished. It's just really apparant that this film is made 90% with green screens because it looks awful.
The characters are not likeable or anything and the story is the the standard oz story if it sucked ass.
Maybe one of the worst blockbusters ever released?

It's the 17 anniversary of the dark knight so I decided to watch the good batman film instead.
Sam raimi shows so much versatility In this one film which has a somewhat just oke script but the impeccable cast and direction transforms that script into something great.
It's kinda like a classic horror movie but disguised as a western, I mean think about it, characters get killed off one by one just like In a horror film.

"i wish i could have seen this in imax" are two reviews i saw and when actually watching it, it looks terrible.not what i imagine my 1,900 film to be but aight.
gravity tries to make you feel like you are the one in space but past that, its extremely dull visually like i mentioned but also in its narrative if you can even call it that.
and again, cgi suits around real life actors doesn't work, especially in 2013.
it does achieve the tension it wants like maybe twice but then you remember there is no danger because you don't know these people.
there is no hook other then space is scary.
the killer doll film that isn't really a killer doll film but instead a film about the crippling mental health of one cory withers.
his struggles to reach his goal of becoming a succesful performer before meeting the doll is pretty sad. we all have that dream we wanna persue but just can't reach that point to where we actually can pay the rent.
when cory adopts the doll as his new act, he stumbles into succes.
you can visibly see in anthony hopkins performance that cory before meeting the doll already has some signs of something inside of him that is not quite right.
but when meeting the doll it feels like becomes a different person yet there is something eerie about the design of the doll and how the film uses it. the idea that dolls are alive or look alive has been an idea used in cinema for a very long time and in my opinion this is a great example as it adds another layer to cory, its like he channeled some of his personality traits, the traits that are popular with audiences into the doll while not making the doll necesarrily alive.
anthony hopkins gives cory a wooden face, like he's the one that is the doll.when found out that he talks to his doll, cory begins to kill.
while i think it doesn't reach its full potential and the romance is the worst about it, magic is still an interesting watch because of the surrounding mystery of its main character which said mystery is never fully explained but i kinda like that about it.for such a b movie level plot, this film got an impressive director and writer in the form of richard Attenborough and writer william gold.
william gold has written films considered good, he even wrote the iconic film misery(1990)
and richard attenborough has directed films like ghandi and chaplin which makes it more suprising that he directed this film in his lifetime.
im not trying to be a hater lately but this movie is fucking dogshit at best.
i didn't like chinatown.
its mystery doesn't compell me and the characters even less.
i geuss jack nicholson is pretty good and the rest of the cast to but i really didn't care.
i think its cool what it is trying to say, its a good idea on paper but in execution its poorly done.
i like that the beast looked like a hawk(lmfao)
deeply atmospheric, locations, sets and costumes all so amazing and the orchestrical score helps sell everything.
i still preffer this over george making new star wars shit.
the fundemental core of the film is the worst part about the film.
we follow these men as they change in multiple ways because of the vietnam war but like.......i don't get to know these characters.
at best they are shallow with like 1 good moment each.what it does is fine, not terrible but they waste the 1st hour, its mostly just yelling and the main male characters being assholes towards eachother which honestly is kinda obnoxious.
that doesn't help me know these characters.
the second hour they are in vietnam and honestly the second hour is the best part about this film but its still not good because of its representations of the vietnamese and the fact there is no danger at all.the 3rd hour we are suppose to recognize what changed but again, i barely know these people so i don't recognize anything but one change and thats the fact robert deniro's character doesn't wanna shoot a deer.
the cast is great aswell as the direction but its bogged down by mediocre characters and story.
What I wouldn't do to transition.
its good but i don't get everything that it tries to do.
a film like this should be an all timer for me....but idk i expected allot more. i couldn't fully connect with any character and honestly some story choices felt weird, i get what they were trying to do but it really didn't help.
like the entire scene where they go on a boat. idk why that was there to be honest.
