Fairly typical knockoff TERMINATOR, or maybe UNIVERSAL SOLDIER.
It is not the worst to be sure, and throwing in a sort of subplot about arm wrestling was… unique.
Read that there was a helicopter stunt accident that claimed a couple lives. That is a damn shame. Forget the absolute tragedy of it, but going out on a film like this… Just makes it sting more.

It’s a Spice World, and we are just living in it…
This film, and its stars, have been unfairly maligned. The film is silly and irreverent, but it is also far more clever and entertaining than you may have heard!

Just when you think Ryan Gosling can't get any more charming, he grows some scruff, puts on glasses and a cardigan, and becomes best friends with a rock.

That was hilariously awful. LOL Terribly generic story told by some questionable “actors.”
Over lit video sure didn’t help this. Regardless of the terrible dialog and acting, they COULD have managed to come up with some decent cinematography, but NOO! They had to turn ALL the lights and shoot it with their JVC.
Charles Band really threw everything at the wall with this one, and somehow it kind of works! I think it is just absurd enough. Difficult to do, and even Band wasn’t always successful at it.
So incredibly stupid (mostly complimentary), but it makes me laugh more than enough times, and they did a pretty great job blending the old and new footage. I even watched the making of featurette on the dvd after to see the before and after's.
Hands down, one of Fincher's best films paired with superb acting from both Michael Douglas and Sean Penn. A fast-paced, unraveling mysterious game from beginning to end, it is still a perfect film 30 years after its release.

I much prefer Brigsby Bear, the awkwardly charming and wholesome version of this story. Highly recommend Brigsby Bear if you like or don't like Dogtooth.
Back to Dogtooth. I read the back of the case, so I wasn't unprepared for the plot, but I *was* unprepared for two specific things:
1. The cat scene, which I hated so much
2. The SOUND of the thuds of the VHS scene and the VCR scene, which made me actually flinch and recoil with each strikeDo I think Dogtooth is good? Yes. Will I ever watch it again? Probably not. It can go in the file with Requiem for a Dream, Funny Games, Hard Candy, and I'm not sure what else right now but there are others.

This is definitely something my mom would have been watching when I was a kid in the 90s, and I would have watched while I sat in the room playing, and I would have found it dreadfully boring.
I see why the people who love it feel that way. I didn't love the non-linear storytelling, and overall it felt sort of empty to me, but maybe that's the point.
