To be fair, gore verbinski's new film in 10 years is not subtle and in some ways thats a negative but it also helps elevate the comedy. The "i just wanted pie" scene is hysterical and sam Rockwell gives a greatly comedic performance, every line delivered by him is gold.
While some characters like the story suggests are more important then others and ingeneral just have a lot more going for them, the unsubtle screenplay makes them the bridge between its anti ai message, technological thesis and the way we as people connect in this age.
Sure, its got phone bad in its first act but i think if you look past that, its got something important to say about connectivity and human relationships.Also I will always champion films that make the best out of their premise with some ragtag group and the most random selection of actors giving it their best.

Fennel is not here to be smart nor interested in exploring the way woman face the wrath of men and rape.
It rather shows you some guys trying to fuck her while she's drunk while not saying anything. Carrey mulligan and everybody else gives an uninteresting performance, I do like that fennel for the most part doesn't make anything look like spectacle with her camera but she also doesn't do anything interesting with it and every shot looks dull because of it.
Its screenplay is horrendous and people who claim this is bold feel so weird to me. Not because they like it or at least it is in some way but because the film actively harms victims and their experiences. Its not interested in diving into woman getting raped with any nuance. No one in this film is a character, they are a puppet for fennel.There is misogynistic tendencies when it comes to emerald's critics, there will always will be misogynist among them and a lot of criticisms could be directed towards male directors but the fact is emerald also just isn't a good director.
The film tricks you into thinking it has any sort of relation to how woman don't get justice while also giving eventual justice by killing off Cassie.

In some ways koas is about the empathy and beauty of understanding between humans but it also sometimes feels dragged out to meet the 3 hour runtime.
Im glad its so long but I don't think it was all worth it, its still good as it has many great performances and stories.

Probably one of the most important queer films of the 80s as I think it stands out by displaying realistic tragedy mixed with sweet and heartfelt moments that isn't just misery porn which is rare for the time.
The drama is so juicy, the characters are realistic and well explored instead of just showing us their misery which will always play part into queer and trans stories but most of the time is never done really well.
Its exploration on being queer with society, family and friends feels so real and relatable.
The cinematography is filled with neon lights filling the streets and the houses sporting multiple bright colors to boot. The torch trilogy simply is a fantastic watch.(Watch my feature film https://boxd.it/cQ1mBp )
Where the hunger games fails and how maze runners succeeds is simple in many ways.
While yes it definitely feels like it tries to be a spiritual successor to that franchise but it actual is good or at least its first film where as the hunger games is very shit.
I think the hunger games is a fine premise, its probably even good but it really thinks it can be a somewhat anti capitalistic hellscape while also just being a big budget save affair while also just not having any good writing or even camera work.I even got a reply on my review on the first hunger games defending the huge amount of shaky cam because we should "feel katniss and her emotions" and fair enough, i think its a shit statement since shaky cam can let me feel emotion and not be dogshit.
Anyway I felt a lot more tension and emotion while watching this.
The writing while flawed gives the cast enough to gain chemistry and its camera is a bit more calculated and restrained then its contemporary.
Its world building is decent and its characters while fitting tropes do those tropes well.

On my first watch, I didn't fully apreciate at the times and I was in denial on how longlegs obviously pulls a lot from this but now, after watching more of kiyoshi's work this is able to use his style of atmosphere, loneliness, nihilism and sound to its almost maximal potential.
Behind everything and everyone there is a boiling need for violence and cure more then anything sees multiple individuals finally releasing that violence out in the open.
The film is hypnotic, yes but the only thing the hypnotism did in the actual film was show what they wanted, what underneath those polite and easy exteriors wanted to do.
Kiyoshi knows how to bend horror to its most humanist form.
Cure isn't simply a movie about a hypnotic serial killer, its a display on the brutal nature beneath society that could be unleashed and has been for so many.
Koji yakusho like in every kiyoshi film he's in is stellar and you also can feel the budget with this one as uses a lot more setpieces and characters.(Watch my feature film https://boxd.it/cQ1mBp )
While its packs a lot of punch and most of it i do like, it also shoves in so much that wasn't needed or just doesn't click.
some characters feel like they didn't add anything to the story, like those hit men. They aren't bad per say but in the grand scheme of things they didn't add anything as one eventually just dies and the other just doesn't do anything except talk.
The shark foot plotline also feels very random, maybe im missing something with that one.I do like the film, its score is great as well as its cinematography and performances but its just a lot of little things get in the way for me.

Probably the most "gem alert" movie ever conceived.
Ridley's directions is both stylish but heartfelt and the editing is both wacky with its transitions and just great.
Obviously my Goat Nicolas Cage Kim Coppola is the mvp of the movie like every movie he's in.
His outburst this time strengthens his character and adds to the films depth.
The films twist, turns, comedic timing is all around well executed.Sam Rockwell bounces off Nicolas Cage really well and so does Alison Lohman which creates a strong trio of characters that have a purpose each in the story and all have a natural conclusion.
The way the film gives humanity to a con man but also let's him reclaim that humanity that he lost is so good.

While its political satire and comedic timing are funny at first, it becomes a slog at the halfway point.

Fincher tries again with another biopic, I thought the screenplay of the social network makes its conflict and characters have far more meaning to whatever this was.
While the production design and costumes are pretty good, it doesn't take away the lackluster story and characters. While i don't mind its usage of as little context to its world as it drops you right in, its also a double edge sword because the film actively wants you care about many things and show you life of herman but Im never invested in him despite oldman's good performance.
